Synesthetic paintings and sculptures exploring sound-to-color translation, presented at this beloved spring gathering in the Seine-Port village square.
Each spring, the charming village square of Seine-Port transforms into a vibrant celebration of contemporary art. The Marché d'Art Contemporain (MAC) Seine-Port brings together established and emerging artists, collectors, and curious visitors in an atmosphere that prioritizes accessibility and genuine creative exchange. For the 2025 edition, Arnaud Quercy presents a curated selection of recent works that traverse the boundaries between visual art and musical experience, offering visitors an intimate encounter with his ongoing exploration of synesthetic perception.
Quercy's participation continues his commitment to showing work outside conventional gallery contexts, where art can encounter audiences unburdened by institutional formality. The outdoor setting of Place Madame de Montesson provides an organic backdrop for pieces that themselves seek to bridge different sensory realms—works that translate the invisible architectures of sound into tangible visual form.
The exhibited works span multiple series from Quercy's practice, including pieces from his Synesthetic Explorations and Research on Harmony collections. These chromesthetic paintings employ a systematic methodology for translating musical keys into color relationships, transforming the circle of fifths into visual harmonies rendered in watercolor, oil pastel, and mixed media on paper. Sculptures forged from metal and reclaimed materials complement the two-dimensional works, introducing spatial and tactile dimensions to his investigation of rhythm, tension, and inner vibration.
More than a commercial fair, MAC Seine-Port embodies a philosophy of art as community gathering—a moment when creation, appreciation, and conversation converge in shared public space. For Quercy, whose practice often navigates between institutional and vernacular contexts, this annual event represents an essential opportunity to share not merely finished objects but the sensations, stories, and sonic landscapes that inhabit them.
Artist Statement
For the Seine-Port edition, I present works that attempt to render visible what normally escapes the eye: the color of a chord, the weight of a silence, the texture of resonance. My synesthetic paintings emerge from a sustained inquiry into chromesthesia—the neurological phenomenon where sound triggers color perception—translated through systematic methodologies that map musical relationships onto chromatic space.
The Research on Harmony series explores variations within specific keys, each piece representing a different facet of a tonal center's character. E Minor, C Major, F Major—these are not merely titles but propositions, invitations to perceive the visual signature of acoustic phenomena. Working primarily in watercolor and mixed media on paper, I seek materials that retain the trace of gesture, the record of time's passage during creation.
Alongside these chromesthetic paintings, I present sculptural works that extend this investigation into three dimensions. Forged from metal and assembled from reclaimed materials, these pieces embody the tensions and resolutions inherent in musical form—the way disparate elements can cohere into unexpected wholes.
