Description

The valley reverses the bell. Where the bell begins low, arches high, and returns low, the inverted bell begins at an intermediate height, rises through a complex interior arc, and reaches the upper register by a non-linear path. In this phrase — G2, Bb3, Bb4, G5, Bb6, Bb7 — the line does not simply ascend: it doubles back on itself, the violet tones concentrating at both the opening and the close, with G5 arriving mid-phrase before the final climb to Bb6 and Bb7.

Three Bb's occupy the upper portion: Bb4, Bb6, Bb7. The violet family concentrates at the top, in pale-to-near-white tones, while G2 and G5 provide the red-orange anchors at the lower and middle points of the phrase. The overall tone is luminous: forty percent highlights drawing from the pale upper Bb's, the composition weighted toward its upper half.

After Variation 14's loud, fast rupture, this work returns to the quieter, more contemplative pace of the series — a Modéré valley that holds the upper register long before releasing, the measured tempo restoring the series' habitual stillness.
