Description

Eight tones spell out an E half-diminished seventh — E, G, B♭, D — a chord built on stacked minor thirds with a diminished fifth. E appears three times in the bass, darkening from yellow toward black; B♭ and D sit in the middle registers, red-orange meeting blue-violet; the upper G tones — G6, G7 — climb toward silver and yellow-orange. The palette splits between warm yellows and cool violets, the diminished fifth's tension visible in the color contrast.
Played Animé, mf, in four — an inverted bell that dips to E1 before returning. The normal articulation gives each tone definition; mf lends the phrase a moderate weight. The half-diminished seventh is jazz's workhorse of melancholy — the ii chord in minor keys, the sound of longing that precedes resolution. Here it stands alone, unresolved.
A standalone study from the Synesthetic Explorations. The half-diminished chord lives between the diminished triad's symmetry and the minor seventh's warmth. This painting catches it in that in-between: yellow and violet facing each other across the register, neither dominating, the tension held in balance.
