Description

Four notes, and a chord that refuses to settle. The G7♭9 — G, A♭, D — carries the dominant seventh's pull toward resolution, then twists it with a flattened ninth. The result is tense, chromatic, restless: red-orange darkened almost to black in the bass, a flash of blue-green from the A♭, yellow-green and orange where the tritone bites between D and A♭.
The étude descends — a slow waltz in three, played Lent, mp, legato. It opens at D5 and falls to G2, the phrase sinking into the lowest register like a question left hanging. Only four tones, but the harmonic tension makes them feel heavier, more charged than their number suggests.
A one-off study from the Synesthetic Explorations — a chord too chromatic for the major or minor series, too specific to repeat. The dominant seventh flat nine belongs to jazz and late-Romantic harmony, and this small painting captures its particular unease: warm colors pulled cool, resolution implied but never given.
