Description
One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. This facet is still held within the prelude — played ad lib, free of the bar, at the deepest hour of the night. From the chord A♭−7♭5 it draws the spirit of the basilica of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires seen from the place des Petits-Pères at twenty past two: a near-black field broken by a coral block, a grey square and a pale half-moon disc — a single ex-voto glow in the dark. It holds the square (column 1, row 8) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
