Description
One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. Here the waltz finds its first hushed three-time, deep in the night. From the chord E♭−9 it draws the spirit of an old residential block on rue de la Banque at twenty to three: soft mauve and blue planes edged with magenta and a sliver of olive — shuttered windows, the deep quiet of the 2nd. It holds the square (column 2, row 1) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
