Provenance

Description

One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. The waltz eases now, the afternoon waning. From the chord E♭−9 it draws the spirit of Guimard's Castel Béranger on rue La Fontaine at four — Paris's first Art Nouveau apartment building (1898), in Auteuil: white, magenta and lavender, blue, purple, green and teal in restless interlocking forms. It holds the square (column 7, row 1) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
