Description
One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. The dance draws toward its close as night falls, circling back to the prelude. From the chord E♭7♯11 it draws the spirit of the Opéra Garnier at twenty past ten — the great lit public palace: red and green, lavender and purple, blue and white emerging from black — monumental against the night. It holds the square (column 9, row 4) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
