Provenance

Description

One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. The dance draws toward its close as night falls, circling back to the prelude. From the chords F−7 and B♭7 it draws the spirit of the Théâtre des Variétés on the boulevard Montmartre at twenty to midnight: tan and magenta, purple and orange, blue and grey edging into black — the last facet, the curtain falling as the day returns to night. It holds the square (column 9, row 8) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
