Description

Nine notes climbing from C#1 to G#5 — the opening study is the most populated étude in the series and the only one where all three chord tones carry substantial weight. The phrase ascends through waltz meter, Animé, mp, legato, beginning in the sub-bass where the root is near-black and rising through the middle register where blue-green reaches its fullest saturation at C#4. The third enters at F3 and again at E4, red-violet warming the otherwise cool line. The fifth arrives only once, at G#5, a blue presence at the top of the phrase.

The canvas is dominated by blue-green in several registers — dark in the bass, vivid in the middle, lighter as it climbs. Red-violet appears in two mid-range entries, a warm thread woven through the cool field. Small accents of yellow-green and yellow mark the non-chord tones, brief intrusions of brightness.

This is C# Major at its most complete: root, third, and fifth all present, the ascending waltz laying out the key's cool palette from darkness to light.
