Description

The strangest of the four. Variation 2 dips into an inverted bell — the phrase sinks from C#1 before rising through the middle register and folding back. Eight notes, Animé, mp, legato, four beats: the only étude in the series in quadruple time, the walking pulse replacing the waltz's sway. The fifth dominates: G#3 and G#4 occupy the center of the phrase, blue shading toward blue-violet in the mid-range where it is most saturated.

But the outsider is B. B3 and B4 — the major seventh, not a chord tone — intrude with accents of yellow-green and yellow, a warm brightness that has no place in C# Major's triad. The canvas carries this tension: blue and blue-violet from the fifth, blue-green from the root darkening toward black in the bass, and those yellow-green accents cutting across the cool field.

The root hides in the extremes — near-black at C#1 and C#2 below, red-violet fading toward white at F7 above. Between them, the fifth and the seventh share the visible space, the chord pulled off-center by a tone that doesn't belong.
