One of the 72 Facets of Paris, a series born of a piano waltz of the same name: the artist gave each of its seventy-two measures the harmony of a Parisian place at a given hour, then painted each harmony into colour and form through his ideamorphic method. The dance gathers pace through the morning. From the chord E♭−7 it draws the spirit of the old rue des Barres behind Saint-Gervais at eight: a blue disc beside magenta and lavender, a pale upright on grey — a humble old lane in early light. It holds the square (column 4, row 1) of the mosaic, which fully assembled forms an abstract portrait of Paris.
