Stirring the Ice at a Café Terrace

Starting point. Ice cubes stirred in a glass, on a café terrace. Twelve seconds of the take, shifted by one semitone.

First codex. The Pitch Codex for Field Material, version 1.0, assigns this fragment a fundamental of B♭1 and twelve weighted pitch classes. Their spread is 1.43: the material ranks almost nothing, and what is posed upon it is posed by the emitter alone.

The chord read. B♭ major seventh over A, in two clusters — A2 B♭2 C3 D3, then B♭4 A4. The rule returns a fundamental and a distribution; it names no chord. Naming it is a decision, and the decision is dated.

Second codex. That harmonic structure is the input of the chromatic codex, which assigns each pitch its colour under a stipulated correspondence. The canvas executes this second rule without exception.

What the work is. Two rules instituted between domains that nothing brings together, executed to the end. The gap between what was prescribed and what was painted belongs to the work.
