Provenance

Description

Six notes built from the ground up — D2, D3, D4, A4, D5, A6 — the root repeated through four consecutive octaves before the fifth enters. Played Lent, mp, legato, in three — a slow waltz, the phrase descending from A6 at the top to D2 in the bass, the line falling through the same pitch in register after register. The power chord as gradient.

Orange darkens steadily downward. Black at D2 barely registers, then dark earth at D3, warm brown at D4, the root gaining color as it climbs. The fifth at A4 bridges the middle in gray, and A6 lifts the top into pale near-white. The canvas is a methodical descent through a single tone — each step darker, each register heavier, the warm hue compressing toward silence in the bass.

Where the opening étude arched, this variation simply falls — the power chord rendered as a column of the same color at six different depths, the waltz settling steadily into darkness.
