Midtones overwhelm this étude. Nine notes dip into Db1 and return to E5 — a valley in four, Animé, p, legato — but the phrase clusters in the middle register where warm and cool tones crowd together. G3 brings red-orange, D4 and D5 add orange, and between them the chord tones at Ab3, Db4, and Db5 hold their blue-green and blue. The accents nearly outnumber the chord tones in the center of the phrase.

The painting is dominated by its middle band — a dense field of muted color where blue, orange, and blue-green overlap. Shadow is barely present, just a trace of black where Db1 crouches in the sub-bass. Highlights are modest, the upper register stopping at E5 rather than climbing further. The warm accents read as earth tones woven through the cool field, softening the chord's austerity.
