Description

Seven notes spanning from C1 to A4 — the C/F# tritone, the interval that divides the octave exactly in half. Played Animé, mp, legato, in three — a waltz with forward motion, the phrase climbing from the sub-bass of C1 to A4 at the crest, where it hangs suspended. The root C appears in three consecutive octaves before F# enters at the third and fourth, the tritone partner arriving in the middle of the climb. A yellow-orange accent at A4 — the climax, a tension outside the chord.

Red meets green: C gives red, F# gives green, the chromesthetic translation of this most unstable interval. In the bass the red compresses toward black — C1 is felt more than seen. Gray fills the middle registers as the octaves transition, and the green of F# brings the first true color at mid-canvas. The warm accent at the crest glows yellow-orange, a visitor at the peak.

The tritone's inherent pull — neither consonant nor resolved — rendered as a slow climb from darkness through gray into the point where two opposed colors meet.
