Description

The sparsest étude — five notes only, and the third overwhelms everything. E4, E5, E6, E7: four octaves of yellow rising from warm to pale to near-white, the minor third repeated and ascending while the root appears just once, a dark whisper at C#2. The fifth is entirely absent. Animé, p, legato, four beats — soft and walking, the phrase moving through an inverted bell that dips before it rises.

The canvas belongs almost entirely to yellow. In the low-middle register it carries warmth; by E6 it has paled considerably; at E7 it is nearly white. Blue-green appears only in the bass, a single dark presence grounding the painting before the yellow takes over. There is no blue anywhere — G# never sounds, and with it the fifth's color vanishes from the palette.

C# minor reduced to its most essential tension: the cool blue-green root in the dark bass against the yellow third stacking upward through four octaves of increasing brightness. The chord stripped to two members, the minor quality carried entirely by that ascending yellow.
