Description

Seven notes, another inverted bell, but leaner than Variation 1. Animé, mp, legato, four beats. The phrase sinks from C#1 through the bass before rising through E3 and G#3 in the low-middle register, where the third and fifth enter close together — yellow toward yellow-green and blue toward blue-violet, both colors deep and saturated at this range. E4 continues the third upward, then C#5 restates the root, before E7 dissolves the phrase into near-white.

The painting is weighted toward the dark end. Blue-green darkens to near-black in the sub-bass; the third and fifth sit low enough that their colors carry shadow rather than brightness. Yellow-green and blue-violet mix in the lower middle, a cool twilight. The root at C#5 provides a blue-green anchor above, but the real brightness arrives only at E7 — a single pale flash at the extreme top.

This is the darkest of the inverted bells, the phrase spending most of its time in the low registers where colors compress toward shadow. The four-beat walk is steady and unhurried, the dip deeper and more prolonged than the rise.
