Description

Inspired by the opening of Stravinsky's Firebird. Six notes played Lento, p, legato, in four — the softest dynamic in the series, restrained, the forward tempo moving through darkness. The chord is gathered low: Eb2, D3, Eb3, Ab3, C4, B6 (Gold leaf) — root and fifth and third all within two octaves in the bass, only B6 reaching above into light. The valley dips to Eb2 and returns.

The canvas is nearly lightless, the étude spending almost its entire journey in shadow. Two warm accents — orange at D3, red at C4 — glow among the blue-violet and blue of the chord tones. In this register, the accents don't blaze; they smolder, their warmth muted by the surrounding weight.

Quiet, inward, nocturnal — the darkest passage in the Ab minor cycle.
