Description

Six notes played Animé, p, legato, in four — soft and restrained, the phrase moving with quiet forward motion. The valley shape dips to Ab2 before returning through B4, B5, B6, the minor third repeated across three octaves at the top of the phrase. Two warm accents — yellow-orange at A3, orange at D5 — pass briefly through the cool chord tones.

The minor third dominates the canvas. Three B notes fill the upper field with yellow-green fading to near-white as the octaves rise, while the root is barely a thin dark line at Ab2. The chord has been stripped to its defining interval: B, the note that makes Ab minor minor rather than major. The warm accents float as small interruptions in what is otherwise the palest, most luminous étude in the series.

A paradox: the quietest gesture producing the brightest canvas.
