Description

The fullest triad in the cycle. Variation 3 carries all three chord tones across eight notes spanning six octaves, Animé, mf, legato, waltz. Eb1 anchors the sub-bass; three Bb's at octaves 2, 3, and 4 build a strong violet center; Gb4 brings green into the midrange; and both Gb6 and Gb7 carry the third into the upper registers where it pales toward white.

The violet of the fifth dominates the painting's middle ground — Bb2 dark and muted, Bb3 settling into its truest violet, Bb4 leaning toward blue. Gb4 surfaces the green third at its most saturated. Above, Gb6 and Gb7 bleach the green toward silver, the third dissolving as it rises. Eb1 holds the bass in near-black, a heavy anchor beneath the violet field. No non-chord accents at all — a pure triad, entirely cool.

The only mf étude alongside the opening study, and the only variation with no warm intrusions. Every note belongs to the chord. A clean, complete statement of the Eb Minor triad at moderate volume, the waltz carrying all three colors upward without interruption.
