Description

The most compact étude in the series. Five notes, four octaves, from Eb1 to Eb5 — the fewest pitches in any Eb Minor study. Animé, mp, legato, waltz. The phrase climbs from the sub-bass through Bb3, Gb4, and Bb4 to arrive at Eb5, the complete triad stated in a small, restrained space.

Eb1 opens in near-black, the root at its darkest. Bb3 and Bb4 carry violet in the midrange, while Gb4 places the green third between them — a stripe of green flanked by violet. Eb5 closes the phrase in a lighter blue-violet, the root returning at the top. The palette holds to cool tones throughout: no accents, no warm intrusions, the triad unadorned.

Five notes and silence. Variation 4 is an exercise in economy — the Eb Minor chord spoken in the fewest possible tones, the waltz carrying just enough material to state the harmony before stopping. Among the ascending studies, this one says the least and leaves the most space.
