Provenance

Description

The densest étude in the series. Variation 1 carries eleven notes — the most of any F Major study — from F1 to A7, with blue-green and blue accents (Db5 and Ab5) appearing as chromatic tensions within the arch. These cool blue tones press against the warm red-violet, orange, and red of the chord's own palette.

Db5 and Ab5 are enharmonic neighbors of the chord tones — they sit a half-step off from C (the fifth) and A (the third), pulling the texture momentarily toward cooler territory before the phrase continues. In F Major's otherwise warm spectrum, the blue-green and blue accents are striking: cool islands in a warm sea.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. The dynamic steps back from the opening's mf to a gentler mp. Eleven pitches fill the arch from bass to silver extreme, the blue accents giving Variation 1 a more complex chromatic surface than any other étude in the series. Shadow and midtone share the weight; highlights are restrained.
