Provenance

Description

The bass rises by one octave. Variation 5 begins on F2 rather than F1 — the root one octave higher than most of the series. F2 is still near-black, but the étude begins from a slightly elevated floor, the arch claiming the space from F2 to A6. Five notes, Lent, p — the first soft étude in the series.

The dynamic drop from mp to p changes the quality of the arch significantly. Variation 5 carries its five notes quietly, the restraint of p contrasting with the wide span and the warmth of the F Major palette. Shadow dominates at 39%, significant for an étude that doesn't descend to the sub-bass F1.

The structure is simple: F2, C3, C4, A5, A6 — root in the bass, two versions of the fifth in the middle, two versions of the third at the crest. The étude places its tones neatly, two per register, ascending to the top and folding back. Quiet and even.
