Description

Two fifths before the peak. Variation 13 contains F1, C3, C4, A4, A6, A7 — root in the deep bass, then two consecutive versions of the fifth (C3, C4), then A4 in the middle, then A6 and A7 at the crest. The chord structure here places the fifth prominently in the midrange, both C3 and C4 adding warm red-orange color before the phrase reaches the silver extreme.

The arc from F1 to A7 is the same as several other études — but the interior differs. The two C's in the middle make this the étude most focused on the fifth: C3 (deep red-orange) and C4 (medium red-orange) stack through the midrange, then A4 provides a brief warm touch before the A6 and A7 bring the phrase to its silver crest.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. Shadow and midtone anchor the lower half; highlights brighten the upper. F Major's closing étude, and the one that most clearly foregrounds the color of the fifth — the two C's as warm red-orange stepping stones toward the silver peak.
