Description

Three notes, five octaves. Variation 11 is the most minimal étude in the series — and perhaps in all of F Major's Synesthetic Explorations: F2, A4, A7. Three pitches spanning five octaves: the root in the bass, the third in the middle, and the third again at the extreme high end. No fifth (C) anywhere. The arch goes from near-black to mid-warm to silver and folds back.

Midtones dominate overwhelmingly at 85% — a remarkable tonal balance for a three-note étude. The explanation: A4 is the midtone center of the palette, and it carries the weight of the phrase's only middle pitch. F2 and A7 anchor the extremes; A4 holds the middle.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. The étude breathes across five octaves in three notes, three enormous steps with silence between them. The arch is as structurally spare as possible while still tracing the full shape. Variation 11 asks what a bell étude looks like when everything is removed except the endpoints and one center.
