Description

Three A's descending to one F. Variation 8 is the most structurally asymmetric étude in the series: F2, A4, A5, A6 — one root in the bass and three consecutive versions of the third descending from A6. The phrase opens at A6, steps down through A5 and A4, and arrives at F2 in the deep bass. The étude is almost entirely the third of F Major, falling through three octaves.

The three A's produce three registers of warm color: A6 (pale yellow-orange), A5 (yellow-orange), A4 (warm orange). Each step warmer and darker than the one above. Then the line arrives at F2 — red-violet, near-black — a sudden shift to the root's cooler, darker color.

Lent, mp, legato, waltz. Highlights dominate overwhelmingly at 73% — three high-register A's weight the painting toward brightness even as the phrase ends in the dark bass. The descent is structured as three lights and one dark: pale to warm to deeper orange, then root.
