Description

Soft descent, full chord. Variation 9 descends from A6 to F2 in seven notes — the most populated of the descending études. F2, F3, C4, A4, C5, A5, A6: both pitches of the chord in multiple registers, the phrase filled with the series' warm reds, oranges, and red-violets. The dynamic is p — soft, with restraint.

Seven notes, Lent, waltz, p. The descent is inhabited at every register: the bass (F2, F3), the middle (C4, A4), and the upper range (C5, A5, A6). No gaps, no leaps — a stepwise descent through occupied territory. The phrase opens at A6 (light red-orange) and closes at F2 (near-black).

Midtone and highlight roughly balance. The soft dynamic and dense note count give Variation 9 a contemplative quality — a slow, fully inhabited descent, each register touched on the way down. Among the descending études, this is the most complete in its traversal.
