Description

The arch and its tension. Variation 2 is A Major's first bell — a rise from A1 (near-black) to C#6 (pale red-orange) at the crest, then folding back. Eight notes span the full breadth of the étude: dense, filled, the middle register occupied with multiple chord tones across several octaves.

A red accent, C5, appears within the phrase. This is unusual: C is not an A Major tone — C natural sits a half-step below the fifth, pulling the texture toward a cooler, slightly mysterious color amid the yellow-oranges and blue-greens. The tension is brief but present, a cool red note in a warm chord.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. Slow and steady. The arching gesture rises from the deep bass and turns at C#6, the third in its bright upper register. Midtones anchor the bulk of the tonal weight; shadow is minimal; highlights spread through the upper range. A full, slow arch with one cool note interrupting the warmth.
