Description

Two études, one pitch sequence. Variation 9 shares its pitch sequence exactly with Variation 8 — A2, A3, C#4, D#4, C#5, E5, A5, C#6, C#7 — but the tonal distribution differs. Variation 8 reads as a slightly warmer gray in the bass (A2 toward gray), while Variation 9 reads as darker (A2 toward black). The paintings look different despite containing the same notes.

This pair — Variations 8 and 9 — explores how the same melodic material can produce different chromesthetic results depending on subtle changes in tonal weight. The blue-violet D#4 accent appears in both, the silver C#7 crowns both. But the shadow budget shifts: Variation 9 carries slightly more darkness in its lower register.

Animé, mp, legato, waltz. The ascending climb arrives again at C#7. Two canvases, one étude — the same sequence translated into color under slightly different harmonic lighting.
