The series' first waltz, the series' first ascent. Variation 1 shifts from the opening's measured four-beat to triple time, and from the valley shape to a climb. From A1 (near-black), the phrase rises through seven notes to C#6 (pale yellow-orange) where it hangs suspended — a six-octave journey in the sway of a waltz.

A violet accent, A#2, appears near the bottom of the range — a chromatic tension that touches the phrase just as it begins its climb. The accent's violet is cool against the surrounding yellow-orange and blue-green warmth, a momentary sharpness before the ascent continues.

Animé, mp, legato. The animated tempo carries the waltz forward with energy. Shadow, midtone, and highlight weigh roughly evenly here — a balanced distribution despite the ascending contour. Variation 1 introduces the three shapes that will define the series: the climb, the waltz, and the chromatic tension.
