Description

Silver at the crest, soft. Variation 6 is the first étude in A Minor to reach C7 — the silver extreme at the top of the register — and it does so quietly: p, the softest dynamic, Lent. Seven notes, bell arch, A1 to C7, all chord tones, no accents.

C7 is near-white in the chromesthetic mapping: a silver or off-white, where the red of C has lightened through the registers to near-absence. The arch rises from A1 (near-black) through a series of A's and C's to this pale extreme, then folds back. Shadow anchors the bass at 39%; midtones hold the middle; highlights are restrained despite the silver peak.

The soft dynamic at this extreme span creates a particular quality: a very wide, very quiet arch. Seven notes in four beats, Lent, p — the entire range claimed gently. Variation 6 is the series' most expansive bell étude in span, and the gentlest in dynamic.
