Description

The only mf étude. Variation 1 is marked with a clear, moderate presence — the single study in A Minor with this stronger dynamic — and it descends in waltz time from E5 (yellow, the fifth) to A1 (near-black) through eight notes. A blue-violet accent, D#3, sits low in the phrase, a chromatic tension near the bass.

Mf is unusual in this series and in these études generally. The moderate loudness gives the descending waltz a declarative quality — the phrase stating the chord rather than searching for it. The line opens at E5 and falls through C4, A3, A2, C4, arriving at the deep root. Eight notes, dense, the descent fully inhabited.

Lent, legato, waltz. Shadow, midtone, and highlight balance almost equally. The blue-violet D#3 near the bottom is the étude's single chromatic interruption — a cool note in a warm phrase, briefly complicating the descent before it arrives at the bass.
