Description

Two chromatic accents in descent. Variation 9 descends from C6 to A2 through seven notes, with D#4 (blue-violet) and C#5 (blue-green) appearing as tensions within the phrase. Both accents are in the midrange and upper midrange — the descent encounters two cool chromatic notes mid-journey before arriving at the bass.

D#4 is blue-violet, C#5 is blue-green: both are cool colors against the warm red-orange of the A Minor chord, and they sit close together in the midrange register. The two chromatic notes give Variation 9 a more complex color field than the clean descents, interrupting the warm palette with brief cool moments.

Lent, mp, legato, waltz. Highlights at 55%, midtones following. The descent opens at C6 and falls through the warm-and-cool mixture, arriving at A2. Among the descending études, Variation 9 is the most chromatically varied — two different cool tensions pressing against the minor triad's warmth.
