Both accents are in the midrange and upper midrange — the descent encounters two cool chromatic notes mid-journey before arriving at the bass.

D#4 is blue-violet, C#5 is blue-green: both are cool colors against the warm red-orange of the A Minor chord, and they sit close together in the midrange register. The two chromatic notes give Variation 9 a more complex color field than the clean descents, interrupting the warm palette with brief cool moments.
