Description

Four steps of A, then silver. Variation 11 contains A2, A3, A4, A5, C7 — four consecutive versions of the root ascending by octave, then a final leap to C7 (silver) at the crest. The étude is almost entirely the root of A Minor, climbing through four octaves before reaching the third at the extreme high end.

The four A's proceed from near-black (A2) through dark yellow-orange (A3), warm yellow-orange (A4), and lighter yellow-orange (A5), each version of the root progressively brighter. Then C7 arrives: silver, near-white. The contrast between the warm ladder of A's and the silver extreme of C7 gives the arch a sudden luminous peak.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. The highlight budget reaches 47% from just one pitch — C7 — while the four A's carry the midtone and shadow weight. A study in how a single high note can shift the tonal balance of an entire phrase.
