Description

The closing étude, alternating. Variation 13 closes the A Minor series with five notes arranged in alternating pattern: A2, A3, C4, A5, C6. Root and third interleave through the phrase — two A's in the bass and lower midrange, one C in the middle, one A in the upper midrange, one C at the crest. The étude weaves between the chord's two primary colors.

A2 (near-black), A3 (dark yellow-orange), C4 (red), A5 (warm yellow-orange), C6 (light red). The warm yellow-orange of A anchors the bass; C4 provides warm red in the middle; A5 continues warm; C6 closes with a light red crest. The alternation creates a rhythm of yellow-orange and red through the registers.

Lent, mp, legato, four beats. Midtones and highlights share the balance. The series closes on this interweaving pattern — the minor third and root trading places through the phrase's arc, the A minor triad's two characteristic colors stated in measured alternation from dark to pale.
