Description

Brightness in descent. Variation 8 opens at C7 (silver) and falls in waltz time to A2 through five notes: C7, C6, A5, C5, A2. The phrase begins in near-white and descends through reds and warm yellows to the near-black bass. Highlights dominate at 84% — the three C's in the upper register carry tremendous brightness even as the phrase falls.

Five notes, Lent, p, waltz. The étude is spare and quiet, but the high concentration of the third in the upper register (C7, C6, C5) gives it a luminous top-heaviness. The two A's anchor the middle and bass; the three C's hold the light.

The soft dynamic and the three-beat descent give Variation 8 a gentle, almost floating quality — the phrase falling from its silver peak through the high register's reds before arriving quietly at A2 in the dark. Among the descending études, this one stays luminous longest.
