Description

Among the valleys in this series, Variation 4 is the most spaced — not in pitch range (B1 to B5 is four octaves) but in touch. Where the other valley études flow legato, this one plays normally, each note with its own attack and release. The sound has gaps between it; the color has edges.

F#4 enters here — the fifth of the B minor chord, rendered in blue-green. Against the yellow-green of the B's and the orange of D, the fifth adds a cooler note to the middle register, something that grounds without darkening. The dynamic is piano despite the Animé tempo — forward motion held quiet, the articulation adding clarity without loudness.

The valley dips to B1 (black), returns upward through the four-octave range, and closes at B5. The balance splits nearly evenly between shadow, midtone, and highlight. An étude that moves with energy but keeps its voice low — and lets each note breathe on its own.
