Description

The range is familiar: B2 to D5, three octaves, the same as Variation 1. The contour is familiar: a slow bell arch from black root to orange crest and back. But the weight distribution differs — here, nearly seventy percent of the canvas lives in midtones, and the pitch sequence includes three D's against two B's.

Three minor thirds — D3, D4, D5 — and two roots: B2, B4. The orange tones accumulate through the middle of the arch, giving the painting more warmth than the root-balanced Variation 1. The mp dynamic sits slightly above Variation 1's piano, and the legato flow holds the orange continuous.

Two bells, nearly the same span, with different emphasis. If Variation 1 balances the chord evenly, Variation 9 leans toward the third — the minor quality concentrated in the midtone orange. The melody emphasizes what makes B minor different from B major: the color of that flat third.
