Description

A descent at Modéré — the only variation at this middle tempo. Seven notes fall from G7 to Eb2, mf, legato, in waltz time, the phrase unhurried but with clear presence. The fifth takes prominence: Bb4 and Bb5 hold violet across two octaves, while G6 and G7 carry the third in pale silver and near-white at the top. A yellow-orange accent at A4 warms the middle. The root sits below at Eb2 and Eb3 in dark blue-violet.

Highlights and midtones share the canvas in near-equal measure — the brightest painting in the series alongside Variation 6. The descending thirds at G6 and G7 flood the upper surface with silver and light, while the fifths glow in muted violet through the middle. Shadow is thin, just a trace of darkness where Eb2 anchors the base. The warm accent reads as a single point of gold against the violet and silver field.

The most luminous descent — the phrase falling from brightness, the chord seen through its lightest tones.
