D Major9 - Research on Harmony

Eight notes descending from F#6 to D1 — the D major ninth chord with all five tones present: root D, third F#, fifth A, seventh C# implied through E3, ninth E. Played Lent, mp, legato, in three — a slow waltz falling from light to darkness. The root D repeats in four octaves — D1, D2, D3, D4 — while A4 and A5 carry the fifth, and F#6 opens the phrase in light yellow-orange at the top.

Orange dominates — the root's warm hue recurring through every register, compressing toward black at D1, warming through gray and earth at D2 and D3, reaching its most characteristic at D4. Yellow-orange brightens at A5 and A4, the fifth's warm tone. Green at F#6 and yellow at E3 add the cooler notes of the chord — the third and ninth, brief departures from the orange field.

The opening waltz — the phrase falling from the green of the third into six octaves of orange, the chord sinking steadily into the deepest bass. Everything in this series descends; this first statement sets the pattern.
