Description

Seven notes descending from F#7 to D3 — no deep bass, the lowest note already at mid-register. D3, D4, E4, A4, A5, F#6, F#7. The ninth E appears at E4, yellow among the warm tones. Played Lent, mp, legato, in three. The phrase falls from silver at the top to dark gray at D3 — not black, the chord never reaching the true depths.

The painting is lighter than most in the series. Without the near-black of D1 or D2, the darkest tone is gray at D3. Orange warms the middle at D4, yellow sits at E4, yellow-orange at A4 and A5 — then the greens brighten through F#6 to silver at F#7. The canvas lives in the mid-range of brightness, neither truly dark nor truly light.

The shallowest descent — the waltz falling only four octaves, the bass registering as gray rather than black, the chord floating above the darkness that grounds the other variations. A lighter étude in a series weighted toward shadow.
