Provenance

Description

Where Variation 9 descended from F7 in waltz time, Variation 10 arches to F7 as the bell's crest: D2, D4, A4, D5, F7. Five notes, Lent, the arch climbing from D2 (near-black) to F7 (silver) at the top, then folding back.

F7 as the crest means the arch's highest point is near-white — the minor third rendered almost colorless in the extreme register. The arch rises through orange (D's) and yellow-orange (A4) before arriving at silver. Midtones carry 56%; highlights 37%; the low-register D2 accounting for the remaining shadow.

The series closes with this gesture: the arch opening into near-white at the extreme upper register, the minor third's color stripped away at altitude. D minor finding its upper limit in silver — the red-violet of F7 dissolved almost entirely.
