Description

Three notes. D2, A3, D4. The entire étude spans two octaves — root, fifth, root — and does nothing else. Waltz, Lent, piano. The simplest descent in the series, the chord distilled to its interval of a fifth.

D4 (orange) opens the phrase and falls through A3 (yellow-orange) to D2 (near-black). In waltz time, three beats, the descent is brief and decisive. The midtones hold the balance; shadows and highlights are almost equal.

D minor at its minimum — no third, no extended range, no chromatic tensions. Just D-A-D falling through two octaves. The intimacy of Variation 3 comes from its compression: the chord is not demonstrated across the keyboard but held within the smallest possible frame.
