Description

Nine notes beginning at C0 — sub-bass, below the piano's standard range, the pitch felt in the body rather than heard by the ear. The densest étude in the series, spanning from C0 to E6. Played Lent, mp, legato, in four, the arch rising from that impossible depth to light yellow-orange at E6. The root C repeats in four octaves — C0, C2, C3, C4 — before D4, D5, and G5 carry the ninth and fifth upward. A violet accent at Bb5 intrudes, a cool visitor in the warm chord.

The canvas begins in absolute black — C0 is darkness before color begins. The root's red emerges gradually through the low registers, still compressed, still near-black. Orange and red-orange warm the middle at D4, D5, G5. The violet accent at Bb5 disrupts the warmth briefly. Yellow-orange at E6 lights the top.

The deepest variation in the entire collection — a root pitched below perception, the phrase climbing from sub-bass through four octaves of red into the warm orange center. The violet accent a single cool thread in a canvas of earth and fire.
