Description

Seven notes from C1 to E7 — the closing variation, the full span revisited. C1, C2, D3, G3, D4, D5, E7. The ninth D recurs three times — D3, D4, D5 — its orange stepping through three octaves, each brighter. The fifth G appears low at G3, tucked between the root and the ninth. Played Lent, mp, legato, in four, the arch rising to E7 at the crest.

Black in the bass, a deep red-orange at G3, then the ninth's orange warming through three registers — the center of the canvas given entirely to the ninth's color. Silver at E7 dissolves the top, the third's yellow bleached to near-white. The palette echoes the opening but with the ninth more prominent, three D notes claiming the middle where the first variation gave equal weight to root and ninth.

The series closes as it began — the full span, the slow arch, the warm palette from black to silver. But the balance has shifted: the ninth has grown louder across the variations, orange asserting itself as the dominant color of the C major ninth.
