Description

G Major opens by falling. The étude begins at the top — B5, a pale yellow-green — and descends through the waltz meter toward G2 in the bass, a near-black. Seven notes, Lent, 60 beats per minute. The phrase moves in triple time, each step of the descent measured and unhurried, the resolution arriving in the low register where the root sits in near-darkness.

Descending contours have a different quality than ascending or bell-shaped ones. There is no suspended moment at the peak, no fold-back. The line simply goes down, and that directness gives this étude its particular character: not a breath held and released, but a long exhale, finding its resting place in the bass. Midtones carry most of the painting's weight; highlights are thin.

This is the opening study of the G Major series, establishing the key's chromesthetic palette: red-orange of the root, orange and yellow-orange of the fifth, yellow-green brightness of the third. The descent traverses all three, moving from light to dark.
