Description

The series closes as it opened — slowly, with a bell arch. Variation 12 is Lent, mp, four beats, five notes: G2, D3, D4, D5, B7. The span matches Variation 11 — G2 to B7 — but the interior differs: three ascending D's in the middle register rather than two G's and two D's. The orange of D3, D4, D5 forms a warm ladder through the middle before the line reaches the silver extreme of B7.

Midtones anchor the painting's center, highlights spread across the upper third, shadow is thin. The bell arch rises from dark red-orange bass through warm orange midrange to a silver-white peak — G Major's palette traversed one final time.

This closing étude echoes the series' opening impulse: the slow tempo, the conversational dynamic, the walk in four. But the shape is now an arch rather than a descent — the series comes full circle, ending in the upward gesture it spent many variations pursuing.
