Description

The shape reverses. Variation 2 is the series' first bell contour — the melody rises from G2 (near-black) to B6 (light red) at the crest, then folds back. After two descending études, the arch feels like a different kind of breath: the line going up before it releases.

Five notes, Lent, p — slow and soft. Highlights are modest; midtones hold the center; shadow has a steady presence. The span extends high, reaching B6 where the third appears in a pale reddish light — the synesthetic color of B in a high octave. From there the étude completes its arc.

The four-beat meter returns here, walking instead of swaying. The change from triple to quadruple time gives the arch a more symmetrical quality — each leg of the rise and descent takes equal pace. A quiet, measured arching.
