Description

The descent continues, but deeper. Variation 1 also falls from the top — opening at B4 and falling to G1, the lowest root in the series. Five notes, Modéré (72 beats per minute), a half-step faster than the opening's Lent. The waltz meter persists, the line moving in its quiet, three-beat sway.

G1 is the sub-bass: a near-black on the extreme low end of the keyboard. The étude reaches for it directly, without preparation or cushion. Where the opening study descended to G2, this variation goes one octave further, establishing a deeper ground. Shadow, midtone, and highlight weigh almost equally here — neither the darkness nor the brightness dominates, despite the depth of the bass.

The palette is G Major's own — red-orange, orange, yellow-green — seen here in a lean, five-note span. The measured Modéré pace gives the descent a gravity appropriate to its depth.
